PRIVATE CLIENT SPECIALIST
I was lucky enough to drive down to Burgundy to visit a private collector whose cellar consisted of all the top wines of Burgundy. I spent three days there and every evening was treated to a fantastic home cooked meal alongside a host of 1999 Burgundies – some of the highlights for me were a pair of Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle 1er Crus, ‘Les Cras’ and ‘Les Charmes’, and an incredible Gevrey-Chambertin by Claude Dugat.
I would have to choose two! Firstly a Cheval Blanc 1990, a mature Bordeaux but still with plenty of life left in it, completely opulent with incredible red fruit and spices. The second would be another 1990, this time from Burgundy – Roumier Musigny 1990. Another fabulous wine, rich and powerful with Asian spices, insanely pure cherry fruit and a wonderfully long finish.
As an avid sports fan, all my guests would be sports related. First off we’d have James Hunt, the legendary 1976 Formula 1 World Champion – the stories he could tell about his life and his rivalry with Niki Lauda would be special indeed! Second would be David Boon, the Australian batsman who famously once drank 52 beers on a flight between Australia and London. Definitely a character and I’d hope to get a few tips to improve my cricket too. To round off, my final guest would be Martin Johnson, England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup winning captain. I think he’d keep us all in check!
I would keep the food simple for this occasion – a creamy leek and potato soup with Krug 1988, steak frites for main with a mature 1983 Bordeaux (an often overlooked vintage which for me has yielded some of the best bottles I’ve ever had) and rounding everything off with sticky toffee pudding and Taylor’s 1945 Port.
